Climate Experts Cover Shrinking Italian Glacier With Cloth; watch viral video

Glaciers are important indicators of global warming and climate change in several ways. Glaciers are sentinels of climate change. They are today the most visible proof of global warming. In addition to raising seawater levels, the widespread loss of glaciers will likely alter climate patterns in complex ways. In order to prevent the Presena glacier in northern Italy from shrinking further, climate experts are now covering the Presena glacier with long strips of fabric that will reflect the sun’s rays and prevent the snow from melting.

Reportedly, around 70% of snow can be saved during the summer with the protective cover which works similar to a silver reflective cover placed in a car window to stop overheating.

It is a tedious task to cover some 120,000 square meters of the glacier. The process has been carried out every year since 2008.

Glaciologist Christian Casarotto of the Trento Science Museum told Reuters: “Glaciers and their retreat are perhaps the most striking manifestation of ongoing global warming. The study of glaciers therefore becomes important for understanding the direction in which we are heading and to be able to correct this.”

However, the viral video has been all the rage on social media as people are heartbroken that we have reached such a devastating point.

Italy is not the only country facing the crisis of melting glaciers. We need to understand that climate change is real. In India, part of the famous Nanda Devi glacier broke off near Joshimath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in February. This triggered a series of natural calamities such as massive flash floods in the Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers, carrying away some people alive, trapping many people under landslide debris and destroying several houses.
