Text description provided by the architects. Over the years Spasm Design has been asked to design homes for families who appreciate our approach. The particularity of Spasm is that we have always strived to build the scenario of our architecture with the specificity of the place, the people and the particular site. The material – copper, in this case, covers a ventilated facade around the house… attenuating extreme heat and greatly increasing the life of the construction. An endearing exploration of the spaces below, on and above ground connected by a network of intimate to regal courtyards, the family have been so open to achieving a true piece of architecture.

This large multi-generational home occupies 2.5 acres of land. Spasm Design was commissioned to design a new way of living on the land in close connection with nature, so that the needs of all generations, from grandchildren to elderly family members, are met. The brief was vast – including entertainment areas, family living areas, kitchen area, temple, gymnasium, home cinema, spa, shops, bedrooms, and solitary and conviviality areas. Many personnel and service structures were also required, as well as a large garage. We chose to build a three level house, a body that sinks, sits and floats above the surrounding greens. The intention is to deliver a truly contemporary modern home with fully integrated Indian stones, woods, plasters, metals etc.

Raw, copper patina has already begun to serve as a marker of its age, a breathing, aging, graceful body. We enjoy the celebration of true uncoated textures of these noble materials. The body of the construction is partly made of concrete boards and copper. Several passive and active climate strategies have been deployed to mitigate the arid and scorching heat of Ahmedabad. Covered greenery, buried programs, bodies of water, misting, ventilated facade, pergolas and trellis come together to work in tandem to create a comfortable home. Several custom-made light fixtures, furniture, marble objects, wooden furniture, handrails, etc. were all developed with the artisans of the team.

A truly satisfying experience, this build was a true collaboration between the builders, engineers, landscapers, artists, craftsmen, metal smiths, facade workers, marble carvers, clients and us. Light, greenery, glorious Indian stone and fine carpentry will highlight this project where we were treated to complete carte blanche. We look forward to the life of this project as it matures over the years…

The greatest reward was that the family found the atmosphere conducive to joint family life which soon loses its essence in the modern Indian nuclear psyche. The main customer, our patron, said: “What greater joy than living with my sons and seeing my grandchildren playing on the lawns.

Architecture must unite the family….
