The 2022 Oscar nominations were announced earlier today – and at Beautiful house, we were particularly eager to find out which films would receive nominations for their achievements in production design. While there was no shortage of spectacular movie sets last year (Spencer, The French Dispatch, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Cruel featured some of our favorites), only five productions received nominations: Dune, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and West Side Story.
We’ve taken the liberty of sorting out those who made the cut before the 94th edition Oscars, which will take place on Sunday, March 27. Curious to know which one we liked the most? Keep scrolling to find out which movie topped our list!
5. The power of the dog
Located in Montana in 1925, The power of the dog counts Grant Major as decorator and Amber Richards as decorator. Expect to see sets including a charming and cozy log cabin with wood-beamed ceilings and Persian rugs galore, not to mention a rustic barn with a backsplash of edgy metal tiles.
4. Macbeth’s Tragedy
With production design by Stefan Dechant and set design by Nancy Haigh, Macbeth’s Tragedy features a range of striking geometric sets amidst a black and white color palette—a noticeably stark contrast to the typical look of a Shakespearean adaptation. And despite the film’s minimalist color palette, the sets still manage to look awe-inspiring.

1. alley of nightmares
Set designer Tamara Deverell and set designer Shane Vieau have joined forces to create the fantastic Art Deco sets by Guillermo del Toro. alley of nightmares, who probably steal the show from Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper. Needless to say, we wouldn’t be surprised if this movie won the Oscar for Best Production Design!
